Lawndale, California may not have a place for hookah lovers to enjoy their fix for much longer. Lawndale, a city in Southen California's Planning Commissioner Nancy Marthens says she voted to ban the lounges because of possible health hazards with hookahs. Hookah aficionados who have made smoking lounges a mainstay in Phoenix could be young people making a political statement, saying they stand with their Arab brothers, despite the fears and politics in the United States. Or maybe tobacco infused with artificial mango or watermelon flavor and passed through a cool-looking water pipe just tastes nice. "It's more of a hangout. You always come here with friends," said Brittani Winchester, 21, of Gilbert, who was relaxed on a pillow, taking puffs off a hookah inside King Tut Cafe in Tempe. Like a genie from a lamp, a bit of Middle Eastern culture is about to appear in Northampton in a wisp of smoke. Pending approval by the state of Massachusetts Department of Revenue, a hookah bar called The Den is set to open at 122 Main St. in August. The Den, which will be the only public indoor space in the city where smoking is allowed, already has received approval for a tobacco permit from the Northampton Health Department. [Source]
